How to Pack Your Kitchen Items When Moving
7th Feb 2023
Moving house can be a daunting time and you need to make sure you have the correct moving supplies to make it successful. Over the years, you’ve accumulated an abundance of stuff that you now have to package safely and securely in potentially hundreds of cardboard boxes. One of the most challenging rooms to tackle when packing is the kitchen. From small appliances to cutlery to glassware; the kitchen is full of irregularly shaped and fragile items that must be packaged correctly when transported to your new home.
What Moving Supplies Do I Need?
Before you begin packing up, you need to make sure you have the right materials. Cardboard boxes are by far the easiest, most sustainable and secure way of packing up your household items. You’ll need an array of cardboard boxes in various sizes.
Here at ASC Direct, we have a large selection of moving boxes and moving supplies to make your life easier. For your kitchen, you will need:
- Large boxes - for lightweight items such as small appliances, oven trays and plastic items.
- Medium boxes - for heavier items to make them easier to transport, such as pots and pans and books.
- Double-walled boxes - for heavy and fragile items as they need that extra support.
- Packing tape - for securing your boxes.
- Pen or labels - for marking your boxes.
- Biodegradable Void Fill - for filling the space between your fragile items.
Alternatively, you can purchase an affordable Removal Kit, which includes the following:
- 10 large boxes with room guide 458mm Long, 381mm wide, 305mm Deep

How to Use the Removal Kit
The removal kit contains everything you need to get started on packing your kitchen. Here are some ways you can use the kit to secure your goods.
Small Appliances
Use the large boxes for packing small appliances. Make sure cables are tucked in nicely and securely. Then use the supplied bubble wrap or rolled-up newspaper to fill gaps and prevent movement. Secure the box with tape.
Glassware
A medium box is suitable for packing your glassware. If possible, stack 2 or 3 glasses together, using bubble wrap and tape to protect them from breakages. Fill the box so there is limited space between items so they don’t fall or crack.
Plates
A medium box is also suitable for packing your plates. Line the bottom of the box with bubble wrap, then place the first plate flat at the bottom. Use a flat piece of bubble wrap in between each plate as you stack them in the box. Fill any space around the plates with rolled-up newspaper and secure the box with tape.
Step-By-Step Guide to Packing Your Kitchen
1. Organise Your Items
Before you begin packing, it’s a good idea to have a clearout and donate any items you no longer need or use. Try to organise your items so everything is categorised and can be packaged together.
2. Pack Limited Use Items First
When you get your moving date, you can start packing items gradually so you’re not rushing closer to the big day. It’s a good idea to start with items you don’t use very often or are seasonal.
3. Eat!
In the lead-up to moving house, try and get through as much open, fresh and frozen food as possible. This will ensure you don’t have a lot of cleanup or waste on moving day and make it easier to package up your food items
4. Take Your Time
When packing fragile items such as glassware and dishware, take your time. Ensure they are secure and you use the correct packing supplies to prevent movement and breakages.
5. Pack Essentials Last
You will need that cup of tea after hauling cardboard boxes to your new abode! Make sure you pack your essentials last and those boxes are easily accessible when offloading your items.
6. Label Everything
Label every single box with what’s inside and where that box needs to go. This is especially important if you have other people helping you move house.
Good luck and remember that preparation is key. Packing your kitchen takes time, so get your moving supplies early!
